ICAP’s 11th Annual Illinois Appraisers Update Seminar is Featured in the December issue of the Chicago Chapter of the Appraisal Institute Newsletter

For the first time ever, ICAP’s Lisle seminar provided an exhibitor showcase which brought together appraisers and appraisal service providers. Eleven exhibitors including representatives from the Chicago Chapter the Appraisal Institute as well as the National Organization of the Appraisal Institute were in attendance. Over 280 real estate appraisers in attendance at ICAP’s 2011 Lisle Seminar

Not many real estate appraisals were completed on Monday, August 1^st in the Chicagoland area as most appraisers were attending ICAP’s seminar in Lisle.  Over 280 real estate appraisers were in attendance and for the first time the seminar showcased 11 vendors.

The morning kicked off by an exhibitor hour where appraisal service providers’ informed the crowd on appraisal related products and services. Included with the morning exhibitor hour was a continental breakfast featuring muffins, fresh fruit, assorted fruit juices, coffee, tea, milk, and a variety of pastries and croissants.

Sharon Bagby.  (ICAP’s President) started the seminar by informing the attendees of ICAP’s current actions and recent accomplishments; after that, ICAP Board members in attendance were introduced and thanked for their contributions and finally Jim Blaydes (Past President and current legislative committee chair) provided information on ICAP’s recent legislative accomplishments.

The first presenter was Dr. Jed Smith of the National Association of Realtors.  Jed presented a very blunt presentation on
the current and future real estate market conditions.  The second presenter of the morning session was Wayne Pugh , a real estate appraiser from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.  Mr Pugh (a technological guru) presented “Cool Tools – Technology for Real Estate Appraisers” which included plethora of links, apps, and other gadgets for real estate appraisers.

The noon hour began with lunch in the Wyndham’s Union Station Restaurant, and ended with another chance for the attendees to visit “exhibitor row” .

The afternoon session started with a brief introduction of the vendors together with crowd prize drawings and giveaways, including an IPod shuffle, a digital camera, and cash gift cards.

Charlie Franklin (an attorney with Belongia, Shaprio and Franklin who represents real estate appraisers in litigation and disciplinary matters) presented a speech tiled “Limiting an Appraiser’s Liability – Do’s Do’nts and Things In Between”.  The presentation focused on the liability real estate appraisers face in their everyday practice and offered ways to minimize risk.  After Mr Franklin’s presentation attendees were provided afternoon treats such as, cookies and ice cream.

The seminar ended with a appearance from Brian Weaver, (IDFPR Appraisal Coordinator) and Mr. Craig Capilla, (an attorney for the IDFPR).   Mr. Weaver and Mr. Capilla discussed current topics of the Appraisal Division and important matters concerning Illinois licensed real estate appraisers.  The presentation focused on mortgage fraud problems and unscrupulous appraisals
currently on-going in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago.  Mr. Weaver and Mr. Capilla entertained the audience with their humor and presentational skills but emphasized important points for Illinois real estate appraisers.

In addition to the vendor giveaways attendance prizes were also given; congratulations, to the attendance prize winners, Dave Skibbe, Scott McCallum, Lindy Botha and Randy Barcella.  Everyone in attendance seemed to enjoyed the day and found the seminar to beneficial to their appraisal practice.

The final ICAP seminar of 2011 will be August 12th in Godfrey.  There is still time to register for this seminar.
As a reminder, ICAP seminars qualify for 14 hours of CE if you attend a combination of Springfield/Lisle and Godfrey.
